No weeping at Willow Hill

15 - 17th Aug 2008

There’s something about Kilbey/Field rallies. Lovely sites in hidden places, often with a good view. Great walks, great fun and an ode or two! This one was no exception. The views were fantastic, a bit less than can be said for the weather, which decided to pour down just as Saturday’s communal BBQ was due to start. Plan B swung into action and a barn was requisitioned so the festivities could continue unabated.

There were no less than 3 celebrations that evening: Dot & Len Field - 300 SOC rallies; Loretta & John Bennett – 150 SOC rallies and Sue & Rob Kilbey – 100 SOC rallies.

To mark the occasion each couple were presented with a plaque and gift from the Club. Dot and Len received theirs from Membership Officer, David Bubb, another rally veteran. Area Committee member Vonnie Hopkins did the honours for Loretta & John whilst Len Field (who else!) ‘dished the dirt’ for Sue & Rob.

Food and wine abounded in true SOC style but for many the best bit was the home made puddings supplied by Loretta. As Vonnie said, the apple pie was ‘to die for’.

Sunday morning saw better weather and no less than 3 odes from Rob at Flag. One was for Len who, not content with celebrating 300 rallies, also celebrated his birthday. A cake was produced to mark the occasion. (The previous day Len had been with his mum who had been celebrating her 90th birthday.)

Cards signed by the other ralliers were presented to all those celebrating before the traditional raffle rounded off a thoroughly entertaining Flag. Several people remarked that Rob could give up his day job, he is just such a comedian. He even christened Vonnie 'Thunderbird 4'. I expect that name will stick for a while!

Thanks to the marshals for all their hard work.
