In the Heart of Sherwood Forest Rally

Mansfield Woodhouse, Notts.

Mar 14-16th 2008

This was the first visit to this site by the SOC, set in the beautiful Sherwood Forest, home to the legendary Robin Hood. The rally was marshalled by Phil and Patsy Capes (only their 2nd as marshals) and ably assisted by Stuart and Margaret Brelsford (their 2nd as co-marshals).

They had set up camp at the top of the site due to the soft ground near to the main rally. An awning room had been constructed between the two vans with great accuracy in order to keep out the expected bad weather forecast over the weekend. The boiler was on and all was ready for the 16 units who were to brave the weather. Friday was cold and windy but it kept dry as the ralliers arrived. The usual Friday get together with tea and biscuits lingered on well into the night.

Saturday dawned still dry but cold, however, by early evening the heavens opened and the promised rain and wind started. The Saturday social in the awning room was a cosy affair, the awnings managed to keep most of us dry (Colin Patterson took the only direct hit at the end of the evening, bad joint between awnings). Stuart did a general knowledge quiz which kept us entertained, the winners were Barry & Lynn Lovatt and Mark & Anne Neale. This was followed by Flag with Anne Neale doing the honours.

Having the flag on Saturday night enabled people to make the most of a longer Sunday to explore the area and not have the formalities of flag to attend. A good idea I think, especially for people with a long way to travel, it gives more free time. During the evening Mick, Dee and Alex Foster payed us a visit. The heavy rain made the exit from the site a bit slippery, some caravans were pebble dashed by skidding wheels! Despite the weather the rally was very well organised, the site was ideal, the onsite restaurant served good food and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves, we certainly did. Thanks to the marshals for a splendid effort.
