SOC Cook Book

Back in 2000 the Club produced its first Caravan Cook Book which has long been out of print. Now nearly 25 years later our caravans, motorhomes & camper vans are much more sophisticated and the cooking equipment available for us to use whilst away from home has also become more varied and sophisticated.

During the Open Forum Discussion following the 2024 AGM, there was considerable support from those present for an updated version to be produced. The Committee have agreed, and I have taken on the task of co-ordinating the recipes submitted, and it will now be known as the SOC Cook Book to reflect the fact that the club is not just about caravans. Although I volunteered to pull this together, please remember that it is Your book that will contain Your recipes.

I would also like to gather some information from members about the type of cooking equipment you prefer to use whilst away in your unit, and to this end there is a short optional survey available via this link SOC Cook Book Survey with a deadline to submit your responses by 30th September so that an anonymised summary report of the results can be included in the Autumn 2024 edition of Going Places, and more fully on the website. The results will also be helpful in determining how to structure the Cook Book layout.

N.B. You don’t need a Google account to complete the survey.

An example version of the Cook Book will be available soon, but to date there has been a poor response to the survey (two only!) and no recipes have yet been submitted from members.

Please submit your recipes to recipes@swift-owners-club.com but please remember to acknowledge the source of your recipe i.e. your own, family recipe, based on or adapted from a recipe by First Name Last Name etc.

The recipes received will be compiled into a “Book” which initially will just be available via the website and therefore accessible via your phone, tablet or laptop whilst away. If you prefer, you can of course just print out the recipes you particularly want to use. The SOC Cook Book will therefore be forever expandable, amended easily and not constrained by the number of pages, and will never be out of print! Whether a print version is eventually produced will be for the Committee to decide, but in the meantime let’s get started!

On a seasonal basis, one or two recipes will be included in Going Places under the title Let’s All Cook & Share. To kick start this, my all-year round recipe for Moroccan Tagine is included in the Summer edition. It is adaptable for either lamb, chicken or just vegetables and can be cooked in various items of equipment e.g. oven, slow cooker, Remoska® etc. whilst away in your unit, and also of course at home. I hope you enjoy trying it!

Rally 43: Christmas Party, Great Bourton nr Banbury, 28th Nov – 2nd Dec.

Christmas is coming , the Geese are getting fat, well they soon will be.

Rally number 43 in the rally venues book. There have been doubts about the rally going ahead due to the change in ownership of the site. This change has been made and the rally can now go ahead.

The new owners are keen to have us and we have agreed to be placed on the main site, this has two advantages, one being nearer the old hall and the other being farther away from the main road noise. The main site gives us hard standing and the price now includes the electric hook up. New night rate is £24. All other details as per the rally book.

Unless we have already received your entry we look forward to hearing from you, in the meantime enjoy the summer.

Ron and Maureen Ward.

Jeff Way

I was very saddened to hear that former member Jeff Way passed away recently. Many long-standing members will remember Jeff as he and Carole were very active members. They organised many rallies over the years and Carole was Rally Secretary from 2000 – 2003.

Jeff and Carole left the SOC for a few years when they bought another make of caravan. They rejoined the SOC in 2019 but after a while sadly had to retire from caravanning due to Jeff’s illness. He will always be remembered with affection by many friends within the SOC. Val & I have many happy memories of time spent in their company.

Our thoughts are with Carole, Pippa, Naomi and granddaughters at this very sad time.

RIP Jeff.

Going Places Errata re Direct Debits

Please note that the first paragraph on Page 17 of Going Places should read:

If you have previously set up and still have a Direct Debit mandate for the SOC Annual Subscription, YOU DO NOT NEED TO TAKE ANY ACTION. If you don’t currently have a mandate set up and would like to use a Direct Debit in the future, this will be possible as part of the renewal process from 1st September.

Please pass on the message to any member friends you know who don’t have access or don’t use this website or the SOC Facebook page.

David Potter

I was very saddened and shocked to receive the news that longstanding member David Potter of Beverley, Yorks had passed away suddenly on Sunday 2nd June.

Val and I have known David and Mary along with their sons Simon and Edward since they joined the club in 1987. They have always been regular ralliers and also marshalled many excellent rallies over the years. David & Mary recently celebrated their 350th rally on the Tallington Lakes Rally in March.

David will be sadly missed by all who knew him and will always be remembered for his quizzes and his sense of humour.

Our thoughts are with Mary, Simon, Ed and their families at this sad time.

RIP David

Please give the family privacy to grieve.

Any contact with the family should be made ONLY via their son Ed.
